About the Jasna study
Behind the light
In her spare time, she likes to play football and go to parties. She is cheerful, bright and prompt. She could talk about her work for hours. Passionate, engaging. Quick. He has the vision and desire to move things forward. Behind the light.
Michaela Doležalová and Studio Jasna .
Michaela followed in her older sister's footsteps and graduated from the Václav Hollar School of Graphics. She thought she would become an illustrator just like her, but after high school she got to UMPRUM and started working with glass. She was fascinated by its translucence, the play of light and shadow. Lighting design was her theme throughout her studies - she co-designed a chandelier for the Sázavsky Monastery, in collaboration with the architectural studio Acht, she created a 14-meter light installation in one of Lifesport's administrative buildings in Prague - Aspira. Michael enjoyed working with glass, but projects of these dimensions can drag on for several years, which did not suit the nature of the young energetic designer. After finishing college, she also discovered that if she wanted to create her own collections and have a brand working with glass, it would not be easy at all. She would not be an artist who tries something out in her workshop, prototypes it. She would have to become an entrepreneur and take on large orders to support the colossus that is her own smelter. She never had this dream. And if she wanted to at least design fragile beauty, it would mean working in the creative center of a larger company, where the designer works in a program and doesn't "touch" the glass anyway.
Studio Jasna
During the covid pandemic, when all projects and orders were suspended and life almost stopped, Michaela found herself in the village. Staying in the city made no sense to her at that moment. An idea that she had been carrying around for some time ripened in her head. She reached for the paper and projected her love of lighting onto it. It turned out that paper, as a simpler, lighter and more storable material, suits her much better. "I enjoy paper because of its speed, its simplicity, which actually doesn't offend me at all, allows me to master the production process much faster." She designed the first four types of DIY chandeliers and opened an e-shop at the end of 2020.
Working with paper
And how is interior lighting actually made of paper? The production process consists of many segments, and Michaela found a craftsman for each, whether it is printing, gravure printing, making dies or embossing: "At the beginning I couldn't imagine it, but over time I got to know my favorite suppliers", she smiles. A fundamental step in the creation of each lamp is the moment when the designer comes up with the cut - she takes a piece of paper and folds it until she is satisfied with the resulting object, then she draws it. She has several cuts in stock, and in order for her to continue working with them if necessary, they are designed in such a way that they can be adapted in a wide variety of ways. Michaela works with graphic and handmade papers. When processing the so-called graphic paper uses a punch - he designs the design, marks which line will be creased (over which the paper will subsequently bend) and which will be cut or perforated. Currently, the designer has become more interested in the input material itself. She wanted to move the brand closer to the use of local resources and get to the essence of the paper itself. And so, in cooperation with a stationer, she started producing hand-made paper. During the production process, it uses innovative 3D printed screens - it uses either those that pierce the paper in a plane, or screens on which bigs are printed - perforated lines - so that when the pulp is collected on the screen, in the places where there are lines, the paper dries thinner - through this place the paper will bend later.
Sustainability as motivation
The 3D sieves we are talking about are plastic, but they can be used again and again - they serve as a preparation for processing crushed natural materials. "I enjoy developing new networks. I try to keep pushing their possibilities, I test new ones." Michaela thus uses new technologies in order to be more gentle: "Combining old traditional craftsmanship with innovative technologies seems to me to be a contemporary direction that makes sense in design." Thanks to this production process, the designer processes local raw materials. Flowers and blossoms of trees, leaves or waste from gardens - all this can become part of handmade paper. Lamps are decorated with yarrow, sakura petals, cornflowers, dandelions, periwinkle. "Nature itself then creates a random decor on the paper, I give the paper shape and design with precision, but chance takes care of the pattern, which I enjoy very much", he adds. The products he creates are recyclable and newly compostable, but Michaela does not want to overuse the concept of ecology: "I use sockets, cables - without them it wouldn't light up. At the same time, I can see where to move the brand and what to improve, which motivates me to be more local and ecological."
From design to installation
On the e-shop you can find collections in the categories DIY, Ready To Use and changing limited editions, Michaela also rents lanterns. The advantage is that the paper can be printed before folding - the possibility of printing a slogan or logo for their parties is mainly used by larger companies. But the heart of her work is made-to-order for private interiors or public spaces - offices, restaurants, cafes. She is approached by people who have already encountered her work, so she often gets a free hand. The designer is then interested in the space in which the lighting will be placed, whether it will be atmospheric or functional light. In addition to the design itself, he also ensures the implementation, he also installs the lighting together with the electrician. And it doesn't always have to be a toy - for example, in the generous space of the Karlín gastroenterprise, Pop up by Zátiší Group hangs on 50 chandeliers and more than 80 paper objects.
Meet up
Studio Jasna's lanterns and paper decorations can be found not only in many Prague and non-Prague businesses, where they create a pleasantly cozy atmosphere, but also in shop windows - Michaela often decorates the shop windows of various businesses (Ahoj Tattoo studio, cafe Periferie) and stationery shops (Papelote, La Papír , Bohemia paper) often uses the paper of the store for which it is created in these orders, which shows its potential beautifully. However, Studio Jasna gets closer to customers through sales events and festivals. Michaela also likes to organize workshops, you could say that from Zlín to Ústí nad Labem, but she prefers to do so in her studio in Letná in Prague: "I am a social type of person, I am often alone in the studio. People come because they are interested in my work - in the beginning we will talk a little about interior design, how light affects us, how to use it. Sometimes creative thinking opens up for people during the workshop and I enjoy being a guide to achieve their ideas. No one leaves disappointed, everyone is excited and surprised that they were able to create something they like. This recharges and fulfills me very much.” Maybe the next time you're sitting in your favorite cafe, you'll look up and see a lighted lantern swaying above you. You might notice a lot of fluttering paper stars in the bookstore, in the checkout line. Maybe you already have an original lamp at home above the kitchen table. Either way, any encounter with the work of Michaela Doležalová will be a pleasant brightening of your everyday life.
